Planes of the Human Body
Terms and Nomenclature
Sagittal Plane: Vertical plane that divides the body into right and left parts.
Median, or midsagittal, Plane: Vertical plane that lies exactly in the midline of the body.
Parasagittal plane: Vertical planes that lie offset from the midline of the body.
Frontal (coronal) planes: Vertical planes that divide the body into anterior and posterior parts.
Transverse, or horizontal, plane: A horizontal plane that runs from right to left, dividing the body into superior and inferior parts.
Oblique (angular) plane: These planes (also known as cuts) run diagonally between the horizontal and the vertical planes.
